Turkey: Mt Ararat

Turkey: Mt Ararat

Mount Ararat Summit Expedition — First Time High Altitude Trekkers Series:

Mt Ararat, Mt Kenya and EBC are what we consider to be the most beginner -friendly mountains which in our experience have proven achievable, affordable and enjoyable for hikers who want to climb their first mountain.

UAE Trekkers have had over 15 successful expeditions to Mt Ararat since 2010. We set the maximum group size at 6 to give everyone attention and ensure everyone is safe.

We always send an experienced Trek Leader to work alongside local guides for this expedition. Due to the conditions in Eastern Turkey, the local guides, though experienced, have limited English ability. They know the mountain well and provide us with good services and tents and support.

Training Required:

Hiking in the months leading up to the summer as much as you can will be the best training for preparation. Just get hiking experience, not necessarily hiking a few weeks prior to departure. In the hot months of June and July, Join us for weekly Ski Dubai hiking sessions at -4c, or do your own fitness routine to ensure you are as fit as you can be before you leave. Good fitness, as always, is an advantage in the mountains.

The first 3 days of the climb are gradual and slow on good trails and reasonable altitude gains per day.

The summit push is a steep 4 hours and will push your limits. The last hour will be on a snowy dome glacier requiring you to put snow spikes on your feet to ensure you do not slip. Once you hit ‘crampon point’ as long as the winds are not too harsh, you will continue to the summit slowly and surely. The way down will also challenge your training as you descend back down the rocky mountain side route.

Gear Required:

You will need cold weather gear and sleeping kit. The full kit list is on the brochure attachment at the top of the page.

Mount Ararat 8-Day Itinerary — UAE Trekkers Style

Day 1 — Arrival & Van Cultural Sites along our 2 hour journey.

Arrival at Van Airport in the morning and start our drive 2 hours, stopping at a few. touristic stops along the way.

Day 2 — Start the Mountain Trek: Base Camp. 2200 M

A scenic drive brings us to Çevirme village where the trek begins. Mules carrying expedition gear, we hike 4–5 hours to Base Camp (3200 m). The landscape opens into dramatic volcanic terrain and you will see the summit and your goal in front of you. Overnight camping beneath the mountain.

Day 3 — Acclimatization & Confidence Building. 3200m

Today we follow the golden rule: climb high, sleep low. We hike to ~4200 m, gaining confidence at altitude before descending back to Base Camp for recovery and rest. This day is key for summit success.

Day 4 — High Camp & Summit Preparation 4200 m

We trek to High Camp moving steadily as the environment becomes alpine and quiet. After arrival we prepare equipment, practice crampon use if needed, and rest early ahead of summit day.

Day 5 — Summit Day: Mount Ararat (5137 m)

Summit morning here - unlike other mountains, must start at 2:00 am. The ascent takes approximately 5–6 hours, gradually revealing vast views across Turkey, Armenia, and Iran. Standing on Ararat’s summit is a powerful, emotional moment — your first 5,000 m peak and a memory that stays forever. Descend back to Base Camp.

Day 6 — Descent & Cultural Exploration

We trek down to the village and transfer back to Doğubayazıt. In the afternoon we explore Ishak Pasha Palace, the ancient fortress, the meteor crater, and Noah’s Ark heritage sites. This day also serves as a weather buffer if needed.

Day 7 — Departure Transfer back to Van Airport and onward journeys

  • There is no option for single tents on this trip as tents are limited and must be filled to capacity. However, the tents are stand up - inside and roomy with cots. The most comfort you can expect from a tent, and sturdy against the high camp winds.

Early Bird Rates Expire March 1.

  • After March 1, rates are fixed at 5600 Dh.

  • If you want to secure a single room for the hotel nights only , 500 dh will ensure single room.
